How to Measure Your Countertops

Break your countertop area into separate rectangles. Measure the length and width of each rectangle — islands, peninsulas, and L-shaped sections included. Enter your measurements into the calculator above. Cutouts for sinks or cooktops do not affect square footage.

Why Accurate Measurements Matter

  • Estimate material needs and reduce waste.
  • Get realistic cost estimates for granite, quartz, marble, and quartzite.
  • Plan for overhangs and islands accurately.
  • Avoid unexpected costs during installation.

How Countertops are calculated

Countertops are calculated based on total surface area, material type, edge profiles, cutouts, and installation factors. Measurements are taken in square feet from cabinet layouts, including seams, backsplashes, sink and cooktop cutouts, and overhangs. Pricing is then adjusted based on material selection (granite, quartz, marble, quartzite, etc.), fabrication complexity, edge details, and installation requirements. A proper countertop estimate combines layout measurements with fabrication and installation variables to produce an accurate cost range.

The formula to calculate countertops is Length (inches) X width (inches) / 144 = Square footage.

This is rather simple but can get more complex as you start to measure more than one area.

Let's take a typical bathroom vanity.
36" length X 24" width = 846
Now add 4" backsplash which is
36" length X4" width = 144
The total square inches = 990
990 / 144 = 6.875 square Feet ...
Round this up to 7 for a typical small bathroom vanity.

The countertop square foot calculator helps you manage the measurement, the rooms and in many cases provides a local countertop professional to review the project size and answer any questions you may have.

Kitchen Designer Tip: Choose the Material After the Layout Is Final

Most people pick granite, quartz, or marble first — designers do the opposite. Why it matters: Large islands, waterfalls, and L-shapes affect slab yield, seams, and cost Some materials hide seams well (quartz), others highlight them (marble, quartzite) Edge profiles and overhangs can change what materials are practical.
